Utica-Rome Moves 57th Season Opener to May 6; Practice to be Held on Wednesday May 2
VERNON, NY – More rains this week along with rain, snow, wind, and cold temperatures forecast for Sunday April 29 have left Utica-Rome Speedway officials no choice but to push back the 57th season opener once more to Sunday May 6. The seemingly endless rains this week have left the spectator parking area saturated. As a result the scheduled racing program has been canceled for Sunday April 29. Instead, the speedway is going to hold an open practice session this coming Wednesday May 2 getting underway at 6pm.
“The parking lot is just way too wet,” stated promoter Bill Shea. “The pit area has dried up as we hoped so we are going to try and get in a practice this week on Wednesday if the weather cooperates. We just need some nicer weather. We get a couple days of sunshine then it rains again. Hopefully the weather will turn around for us.”
The gates will open at 4:30 p.m. this Wednesday with practice running from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. All divisions are welcome for the warm-up session. Pit admission is only $20.
With May 6 now set as the opener, drivers only have one week to get ready for the DIRTcar 358-Modified Series which returns for the first of appearances in 2018 on May 13. The New Yorker 100 for the DIRT 358-Modified will bring drivers from every corner of the Northeast. $4,000 will go to the winner of the 100-lap event.
The May 6 event is also be the first full point event for the DIRTcar 358-Modifieds at they begin the chase for the $5,000 title. The Broedel Energy DIRTcar Sportsman and Ted’s Body Shop DIRTcar Pro Stocks begin their point chases as well. The Rookie Sportsman will complete the program.
May 6 show is the also the first PICK 4 program of the season with the racing action presented by Budweiser, VP Race Fuels, and Wilbur -Duck Chevrolet. Events on the schedule labeled PICK 4 will offer all fans in attendance a chance to win prizes throughout the racing program. Prizes include, but are not limited to, free passes for future shows, food vouchers for the concession stands, Utica-Rome Speedway gear and much more.
Racing on May 6 will get underway at 6 p.m. with grandstand gates opening at 3:30 p.m. Tickets on Budweiser, VP Race Fuels, and Wilber-Duck Chevrolet Night for the grandstands are just $13 while it’s $10 for Seniors/Students/Military and kids under the age of 16 are free.
