JASON BARNEY SURVIVIES FRANTIC FOUR CAR BATTLE TO WIN COLE CUP FOR THE 360 SPRINTS, GLENN FORWARDS TAKE BIG SPORTSMAN WIN
VERNON, NY- A jam packed pit area greeted fans this past Tuesday, October 3, at Utica-Rome Speedway as 47 Super DIRTcar Series 358-Modifieds, 30 360 Sprints, and 36 Broedel Energy DIRTcar Sportsman filled the expansive pits. When everything was settled, it was Jason Barney taking the hard fought $3,000 Cole Cup win in the 360 Sprints while Mat Williamson ran down the top two all-time winners at Utica-Rome Speedway to score his first ever 358-Modified series win, and first win at Utica-Rome Speedway. Glenn Forward held on to take the $1,000 to win Broedel Energy DIRTcar event.
Lucas Wolfe and Danny Varin led the 360 Sprint field down to the green flag to begin the 25-lap Cole Cup A-Main, with Varin gaining the early edge to lead lap one. Just after the field completed the opening lap, Larry Wight slipped over the banking in turns three and four to bring out the only caution flag of the event. When racing resumed, Varin again gained the advantage over the field but sixth place starter Jason Barney was already making his presence felt as he slipped into second by lap three, pushing Wolfe back into the third spot. By lap 10, Varin was in heavy lapped traffic which set up an intense four car battle for the lead with Varin narrowly holding the lead with heavy pressure coming from Barney, Wolfe, and eighth place starter Mike Mahaney.
Just after the field passed the halfway point on lap 13, Varin made a rare mistake as he jumped over the banking in turn four which caused him to lose all momentum and dropping himself to the fourth spot. Barney was the benefactor of Varinโs miscue as he was score the leader on lap 14, but that was short lived as Wolfe slipped by to lead lap 15. Barney was not going away though, as he retook the lead on lap 17. Mahaney followed Barney to get by Wolfe and grab the runner-up position and even made several attempts to get by Barney, but the 2017 Lucas Oil Empire Super Sprint champion was able to fend him off. Barney held on to grab his first-ever Cole Cup win followed by Mahaney, Wolfe, Varin, and Billy VanInwegan. Josh Pieniazek, Shawn Donath, Matt Tanner, Larry Wight, and Chuck Hebing completed the top 10.
In the Broedel Energy DIRTcar Sportsman nightcap, pole sitter Glenn Forward took the early lead with Brent Joy, track champion Matt Janczuk, Rocky Warner, and Mark Effner in tow. Janczuk grabbed the second spot on lap four and went after Forward but was unable to catch him. Lap 10 saw Warner take over the runner-up spot and set his sights on the leader Forward. By lap 14, Warner was applying heavy pressure to Forward in an attempt to gain the lead. Warner seemed to complete the pass as the duo raced down the backstretch only to have the yellow flag wave for a stopped car, nullifying the pass. The restart saw Forward pull away until a lap 24 caution again slowed the pace. When the green flag come out for the one lap dash to the finish, Forward was able to pull away to the win while then second place Warner and third place runner Janczuk had some issues which dropped back in the finish. Joy, Kyle Inman, Rocco Leone, and AJ Filbeck rounded out the top five.
