RAIN CANCELS RACING THIS SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 3 AT UTICA-ROME SPEEDWAY, TRACK CHAMPIONS DECIDED
VERNON, NY- With the remnants of Hurricane Harvey sweeping through the area overnight Saturday and into Sunday morning, with more forecast throughout the day, Utica-Rome Speedway management was forced to cancel in Sunday September 3. Scheduled was a huge show that featured the Lucas Oil Empire Super Sprints plus the final night of points for the Gates-Cole Auto Insurance Modifieds, Broedel Energy Sportsman, the DIRTcar Sportsman, and Rookie Sportsman.
“I really hate to cancel this show”, stated track owner Bill Shea, “but with the rain we have already received plus the cool temperatures and overcast skies I don’t think we could get the track race ready. Add in the rain that is forecasted to come in this afternoon, it would make for a miserable experience for everyone so we decided to cancel.”
With the rainout, the 2017 track championship in the weekly divisions are now official with Matt Sheppard winning the Gates-Cole Auto Insurance Modifieds, Matt Janczuk claiming the Broedel Energy Sportsman, and Mike Welch the champion in the DIRTcar Pro Stocks.
Now the focus will shift to the highest paying DIRTcar Sportsman event of the season, coming up on Sunday September 10. Donath Motor Worx will present the Ultimate Sportsman Showdown that will be the winner a whopping $5,000 to win and $500 to start out of a purse totaling over $23,000. Also, Beyea Custom Headers is offering $1500 in certificates for heat winners, hard charger, plus a random drawing. Management is currently looking to secure more contingency awards as well.
Pit gates for this Sunday will open at 1 p.m. with grandstands opening at 2:30 p.m. Racing is set to begin at 4 p.m. Registration forms plus format information are available at www.uticaromespeedway.com.
