WET GROUNDS FORCES UTICA-ROME SPEEDWAY TO CANCEL ON SUNDAY MAY 14, ADDS OPEN PRACTICE DATE
VERNON, NY- The extremely wet spring continues to take its toll on Utica-Rome Speedway as track management has been forced to cancel this Sunday, May 14. The opening round of the King of Dirt Sportsman and Pro Stock Series was scheduled along with a weekly show of Gates-Cole Auto Insurance Modifieds presented by Wilber-Duck Chevrolet. The early morning decision was made to prevent any unnecessary travel and expense for the travelling teams of the King of Dirt Series.
With rain nearly every day for the past two weeks, except for a couple days this week, the speedway grounds have had little chance to dry. The hardest hit area is the spectator parking areas, which was an issue during the last racing program on April 30. With the potential of more rain coming during the afternoon as another system moves in, track management made the tough decision to cancel the program. “We’ve been struggling with wet grounds for the past couple weeks, especially in the parking lot,” stated track owner Bill Shea. “Just getting lawn mowers on the lot to mow has been a challenge.”
The King of Dirt Series events for both the Sportsman and Pro Stocks will be made up on Sunday, June 18.
Track management has decided to run an open practice session next Sunday, May 21, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. for all divisions. Utica-Rome Speedway was scheduled to be silent next week but with drying weather predicted all week, management decided to let drivers take advantage of the date to get some much-needed track time.
