Go Nuclear Series Returns To Utica-Rome Sunday For Gnome Cup Completion
Preliminary Race Action Was Completed May 22
STIRLING, Ont. – August 10, 2016 – The Go Nuclear Late Model Series is set to return to action on Sunday, August 14 for the completion of the third annual Gnome Cup at Utica-Rome Speedway in Vernon, NY. All preliminary race action and the first three laps of the scheduled 30-lap A-Main were completed on May 22 before rain washed out the remainder of the event.
The $1500 US-to-win, $175 US-to-start race will resume with the running order from the caution point on lap three with no new drivers permitted to enter the race. However, substitute drivers will be permitted to a previous driver’s entry, but must restart the race at the rear of the 24-car field.
The Go Nuclear Series will join the also rescheduled Race of Champions Modified Tour for a 1:00pm start time with pit gates scheduled to open at 11:30am. Following the completion of the rescheduled events, an unsanctioned Crate Late Model race will be run alongside a regularly scheduled Utica-Rome program. Drivers will pay a separate entry fee for the second event.
At the time of the lap three caution flag, Auburn, NY native Chris Fleming led West Monroe, NY pilot Dale Caswell and Watertown, NY driver Billy Eisele. Caswell, Eisele and Sam Pennacchio of Niagara Falls, Ont. won the qualifying heats earlier in the day. Greg Belyea of Stirling, Ont was the fast qualifier around the big half-mile oval with a lap of 22.073 seconds.
Drivers will evidently face different track conditions for Sunday’s race given the night will start immediately with the feature events.
The Go Nuclear Series has been idle since competing at Ohsweken (Ont.) Speedway’s Northern Crate Nationals on July 25 when John Waters of Whitesville, NY went to victory lane.
Trenton, Ontario’s Charlie Sandercock enters what is now the series’ sixth feature of the season at the top of the championship standings. Sandercock has two wins this season, both of which came north of the border at Brighton and Cornwall speedways. He leads Brighton, Ont. natives Brandon Mowat and Phil Potts by 44 and 47 points, respectively. Fleming and Belyea occupy fourth and fifth in the standings. The one allotted drop race has not been calculated.
