VERNON, NY- The Memorial Day Weekend is looked at by many as the unofficial start to the summer racing season in the Northeast and the Utica-Rome Speedway is kicking the season off in grand style with a big two day event.
First, on Sunday May 26, Gates-Cole Associates will present a huge show that will include the Lucas Oil Empire Super Sprints plus the Modifieds, Sportsman, Pro Stocks, and Pure Stocks plus a huge fireworks display by Majestic Fireworks.
Action in the Modified division has been intense every week with late race passes or charges from deep in the pack for the win happening pretty much every week. So far this season, there have been five different winners in the Modifieds with Ronnie Johnson, Ryan Phelps, Todd Burley, Stewart Friesen, and Matt Sheppard all finding victory lane so far. Just some of the drivers still looking for their first checkered flag of the season include Larry Wight, Mike Mahaney, Willy Decker, Pat Ward, Dale Planck, Jimmy Davis, Jason Rood, Rob Bellinger, Casey Williams, Alan Johnson, and many more. Will it be someone different this week or will someone become the first repeat winner?
The Empire Super Sprints have seen just two full point events plus a non point challenge event at Selinsgrove Speedway but the action has been fast and furious in so far this season. After racing part time last year due to injury, Steve Poirier has returned to full time action this season and finds himself in familiar territory as he leads the point standings. Poirier has also picked a win already this season at the season opener at the Can-Am Speedway. Chuck Hebing, Shawn Donath, Justin Barger, Kevin Ward, Jr., Dylan Swiernik, Jeff Cook, Michael Parent, Lance Yonge, Paul Kinney, Jason Barney, Cory Sparks, and Joe Trenca are just some of the drivers looking to break into victory lane and challenge for the point lead. TJ Stutts was the winner in the last event while Tony Stewart was the in the Mach 1 chassis Challenge event, both at Selinsgrove Speedway.
The Sportsman, Pro Stocks, and Pure Stocks will also be in action this Sunday evening as each class will all provide their own brand of exciting racing action.
After the dust settles on the racing action and the fireworks have lit up the night sky on Sunday, the staff and management will begin preparations for another big event on Monday, May 27.
The annual Victoria 200 event, this year sponsored by VP Racing Fuels, will again see the winner of the Modified 100 lap event collect a big $5,000 paycheck. Again part of the Race of Champions Modified Series, this event annually draws some of the biggest names in Modified racing including Brett Hearn, Billy Decker, Ryan Godown, Rick Labauch, Bobby Varin, Jimmy Horton, and many more will take on the tough weekly Utica-Rome Speedway field. The question is, can anyone slow down Bobby Varin, who has been dominant in recent years in Utica-Rome’s big events especially the ones that allow the use of sail panels such as this event. Varin has been victorious in four consecutive $10,000 events at Utica-Rome Speedway that allow the use of the high side panels, with two consecutive in both the Victoria 200 and New Yorker 200 events. In two visits this season at the Vernon oval, mechanical problems have plagued Varin and a win in this event would be a perfect remedy.
The 602 Sportsman will visit the “The Action Track of the East” for the first of their four scheduled appearances this season as they will compete in their own $1,000 event. Sportsman drivers from all over the region are expected as they always look forward to their events at the half mile oval.
Action on Sunday will begin at 5:30 p.m., with gates opening at 3 p.m. The gates for Monday’s big event open at 2:30 p.m. with racing set to begin at 6 p.m.
The Modifieds will be allowed the use of sail panels for both days, allowing teams in competition on Sunday evening to gain some valuable track time with the added sheet metal. Also, Sunday evening’s Modified winner will be a guaranteed starter for the following day’s event.
