JIMMY DAVIS CAPTURES SECOND WIN OF THE SEASON AT UTICA-ROME SPEEDWAY, STEWART FRIESEN $10,000 RICHER AFTER WINNING CHAMPIONSHIP

VERNON, NY- Another huge crowd filled the grandstands this past Sunday, September 2, for the final Sunday night event of the season and they were once again treated to a full night of racing action and saw the 2012 track champions get crowned.  Winners on Gates-Cole Associates night included Jimmy Davis in the Modifieds with Stewart Friesen capturing the $10,000 championship.  Matt Janczuk was the Sportsman victor as well as the champion with Tom Denton also winning in the Pro Stocks and being crowned as champion.  Rick Breed was victorious in the Pure Stocks with Ron Hawker taking the championship.

Jason Rood blasted to the point when the Modified starting field took the green from his fourth starting spot to take early command of the 30 lap Modified feature.  The eighth place starter, Ryan Phelps, was also rocketing towards the front and by lap three; he was able to get by Rood to take over the top spot with sixth place starter Jimmy Davis following him through.  A lap eight caution slowed the field and the restart saw Davis grab the lead away from Phelps and begin to pull away.  With 10 laps completed, it was Davis over Phelps, 14th place starter Stewart Friesen, 11th place starter Larry Wight, and 13th place starter Todd Burley.

Green flag racing prevailed throughout the middle portion of the race as drivers continued to jockey for position all over the wide half mile, and on lap 14, Friesen was able to slip by Phelps for second and try to run down Davis.  Despite heavy lapped traffic, Davis was up to the task as he was able to maintain his advantage over the rest of the field.  With 20 laps in the books, the leader board showed Davis over Friesen with Ronnie Johnson making his presence felt after starting 12th.  Phelps and Wight rounded out the top five spots.

As the laps continued to click off, the leaders continued to work through heavy lapped traffic but Davis was continued to show no signs of slowing down as he looking to capture his second win of the season.  The final caution of the night slowed the pace on lap 28 when the lapped car of Shannon Whaley and fourth place Phelps spun in turn one, giving Friesen and the rest of the field a shot at Davis.  The restart, Davis held off all comers as he took off and ran to his second win of the season with Friesen, Johnson, Pat Ward, and Mike Mahaney chasing.  Rounding out the top ten was Wight, Mitch Gibbs, Burley, Bobby Varin, and Alan Johnson.  Friesen collected his third consecutive Modified title, fifth overall, and will be collecting $10,000 for his efforts in the Awards Banquet in November.

Pole sitter Bobby Heintz set the pace in the Sportsman 20 lap feature, leading the 10 circuits until the lone caution of the race flew on lap 10.  It was at this point that 14th place starter and 2012 Sportsman track champion would take the lead after the restart and set the pace for the remainder of the event.  The battle for second raged on for the last six laps of the feature as Claude Hutchings, Jr. and Jeremy Vunk with Vunk nipping Hutchings for the spot at the checkered flag.  Heath Carney and Steve Way completed the top five spots.  The 2012 title is the second consecutive championship for Janczuk at Utica-Rome Speedway.

By simply starting the 20 lap Pro Stock main event, Tom Denton became the 2012 Pro Stock champion so with the title sewn up and had nothing to lose when the green flag dropped.  Jim Money led the opening circuit from his pole spot with Jim Normoyle blasting by a lap later while Denton was carving a path to the front from his 13th starting spot.  With five complete, Denton was into the fifth spot and going for more.  By lap seven, he was up to second and pressuring Normoyle for the lead and a circuit later he made the pass for the lead.  Denton would dominate the rest of the event to put an exclamation point on his sixth championship season with his sixth win in 2012.  Glenn Forward, Normoyle, Mark Effner, and Chris Carr rounded out the top five spots at the finish.

Bill Mason led the opening 10 laps of the 15 lap Pure Stock main event from his fourth starting spot until the winner, Rick Breed, took over on lap 11.  Breed would hang to win fourth win of the season followed by Mason, Ron Hawker, Rob Thieme, and Chris Cunningham.  Hawker’s third place finish was good enough to give him the 2012 Pure Stock title, his third overall.

The final weekend of racing will close out the 2012 season at the Utica-Rome Speedway next Friday September 7 and Saturday September 8 with the annual New Yorker 200 Weekend.  All four weekly divisions will compete for increased purses plus the 602 Crate Sportsman.  Log on to www.uticaromespeedway.com for complete schedule information plus much more.  The speedway office can be contacted by calling (315)829-4557.
