J.J. Michaels was one of the most popular local drivers at the Utica-Rome Speedway during his career, with both fans and drivers alike.  J.J. was aggressive, yet smooth and clean, on the track which earned him the respect of his competitors and endeared to the fans.  During his career, J.J. amassed a total of 49 wins, 21 at Utica-Rome, at a total four different tracks.  For years, the Michaels clan was a staple on the Outlaw Circuit which consisted of the Brewerton, Fulton, and Utica-Rome Speedways, with the yellow no. 31 usually the first in line each evening on the familiar brown rollback with his father John holding court with anyone who would listen.  What J.J.’s fans loved most about him was that he was one of them, fun loving and down to earth.  Lacking the huge financing that many teams he competed against had, J.J made up for in sheer determination and talent.  Unfortunately, J.J. passed away in the fall of 2005 after a short illness.

Matt Sheppard and Mike Mahaney are currently tied at the top of the Modified point standings with defending champion Stewart Friesen just four points back with Billy Decker just six markers back.  In fifth is opening night winner Robby Bellinger followed by last week winner Jimmy Davis with Ryan Phelps, Ronnie Johnson, Alan Johnson, and Kenny Tremont rounding out the top ten spots.  Some of the drivers just outside of the top ten include Willy Decker, Pat Ward, Bobby Varin, Alan Barker, Danny Varin, Larry Wight, and more.  They are all vying for the $10,000 champions check the will be awarded in November.

A full card of Sportsman, Pro Stocks, and Pure Stocks is also scheduled on this special Mothers Day event with racing kicking off at 6 p.m.  Gates will open at 3:30 p.m.

Just a reminder to Modified teams, this event will run under the weekly Utica-Rome Speedway rulebook which also means no sail panels.  Teams will draw for heat position as they enter the pits with a redraw for feature position for the top finishing drivers in the heats.  The event will pay full points and counts towards the track’s weekly handicapping.
