VERNON, NY- The much anticipated release of the book covering the first 50 years of auto racing at the Utica-Rome Speedway is now just a couple of weeks away, and fans still have an opportunity to reserve their copy before the August 17 release. “The Home of Heroes” by Bones Bourcier will be must have book for any fan of local short track racing, especially in the Central and Mohawk regions of New York. To commemorate the occasion, a huge event for the Modifieds will run that will pay $10,000 to the winner. The “VP Racing Fuels 100” will be part of the Race of Champions Dirt Modified Series and will be complimented with an appearance by the Empire Super Sprints and fireworks.
Noted motorsports author Bones Bourcier and Coastal 181will provide a window into the rich history of the speedway that will cover the heroes of the past such as Richie Evans, Lou Lazzaro, and Jerry Cook. Bourcier’s words will then carry readers into the dirt era where Paul Jensen, Donnie Wetmore, Dale Planck, Mitch Gibbs, and more carried on the tradition of the drivers before them. Finally, the journey will end in the 2010 season, where Stewart Friesen, Bobby Varin, Pat Ward, Ronnie Johnson, Todd Burley, Willy Decker, and more continue to add chapters to Utica-Rome Speedway’s rich history. The hardcover book will be over 400 pages, packed with stories, pictures, and statistics.

Race of Champions Dirt Modified Series points as the event is another stop in the popular Modified series. Can track regulars Stewart Friesen, Pat Ward, Bobby Varin, Todd Burley, Willy Decker, Alan Johnson, Kenny Tremont, Bill Trexler, Jr., Jason Rood, and more hold off the invading stars? Billy Decker, Matt Sheppard, Jimmy Phelps, Jeff Strunk, Jimmy Horton, Danny Johnson, and Larry Wight are just some of the driver expected to compete for the $10,000 top prize. In a recent midweek event, Billy Decker took the win with Trexler representing the locals well with a second place finish over Varin, Friesen, and Ward.
Joining the Modified for the special Wednesday show will be the exciting Lucas Oil Empire Super Sprints who always thrill the fans with their fast side by side racing action. In their two previous visits to the “Action Track of the East” in 2011, Steve Poirier and Chuck Hebing were victorious over their fellow sprinters. Shawn Donath, Kevin Ward, Jr., Cory Sparks, Lance Yonge, Alain Bergeron, Jeff Cook, Matt Tanner, and Michael Parent are just some of the drivers expected to on hand for the midweek event.
Pre order forms for the “Home of Heroes” are available at the speedway . A deposit of $25 is all that is needed to secure a copy. Only 1,500 copies of the book will be printed, so make sure to get a copy for yourself or that special race fan in your life. The remainder of the balance, totaling $55 for each copy purchased, will be do upon receipt.
Gates for this huge event will open at 4 p.m. with racing set to go off at 7 p.m.
